Christian Vidosa Bursary
The Christian Vidosa Bursary honours a great figure in Canadian fencing, Christian Vidosa. Christian was undoubtedly Canada’s best international referee, rated FIE-A in all three weapons. He presided in three Olympic Games and ten World Championships. He was a proud supporter of Canadian fencing, and youth fencing in particular.
This Bursary will be awarded in his memory, at the annual Vidosa Memorial Cadet Open. The Ontario winner of each event will receive $500 to assist with expenses to compete at the Canadian Cadet National Championships.
Policies and Procedures
Vidosa Bursary
The Christian Vidosa Bursary Award was created in 2006 by the Ontario Fencing Association, in partnership with the Beaches Sabre Club, to honour our friend and mentor Christian Vidosa who died of pancreatic cancer in 2004.
The Award recognizes the Ontario winners of the Vidosa Cadet Open each year by subsidizing their expenses to the Canadian National Championships.
Policy
-
In all cases, the Vidosa Bursary will only be awarded to:
- Athletes who are registered in the Ontario Fencing Association and fencing for the Province of Ontario in the current year and
- Athletes who are current members in good standing of the Ontario Elite Team Program
-
In order to be eligible for the Bursary in each weapon, there must be a minimum of four athletes competing, in that weapon. This number may be adjusted upward each year by a decision of the Board of Directors, forty-five days in advance of the competition. The decision will be made based on the total number of athletes in that weapon, registered in the Ontario Cadet Elite Team Program.
-
The Vidosa Bursary will be contested at the Vidosa Cadet Open if:
· The Vidosa Cadet Open is held
· The Vidosa Cadet Open continues to serve the needs of the members in terms of size of venue, safety and appropriateness of venue, quality and quantity of referees, and any other conditions relevant to the sanctioning of an Open competition
-
If the winner of the event does not meet the minimum standards (a registered Ontario athlete in good standing and a member of the Ontario Elite Team), no award will be given for that event.
-
From time to time, the Vidosa Cadet Open will be deemed to be the Ontario Cadet Championships .
-
If the Vidosa Bursary is not contested at the Vidosa Cadet Open, it will be contested at the Ontario Cadet Provincial Championships.
-
In order to receive the Vidosa Bursary, the athlete must attend the current season’s Canadian National Championships in any event. Exceptions may be made to this condition by petitioning the OFA Board of Directors for reasons of injury, illness, or other special circumstances. The decision of the OFA will be final and no further appeal will be accepted. Letters must be received by electronic or regular mail not more that 10 days after the end of the Canadian National Cadet Championships.
Appeals may include:
· athlete was ill or injured and could not attend Nationals
· other emergency
Since attendance at National Championships is basic to any achievement for fencers, school exams and family obligations will not be accepted as a reason for not attending Nationals. Those athletes who qualify for Senior National Championships may claim the Bursary for attendance at this event.
-
The amount of the Bursary will be decided by the High Performance Committee on a yearly basis.
-
The Vidosa Cadet Open is an open competition for those athletes in the age category of Cadet.
Procedures
